“You can be sick with a healthy mouth but you cannot be healthy with a sick mouth!” Dr. Doug Thompson DDS, Founder of Wellness Dentistry Network
Did you know that scientific research continues to strengthen the connection between the mouth and the body?
Under the direction of Dr. Thomas Frank and as part of a thorough oral health evaluation, Dentistry for Total Body Wellness routinely checks for the only two diseases of the mouth that are caused by bacteria. These are gum disease and cavities.
Both tooth decay and gum disease, if left untreated, increase the risk of developing serious health issues such as cardiac problems, stroke, and high blood pressure. Since more than 75% of Americans have some form of gum disease, our first priority will be to develop a plan to cure and stabilize it.
Studies done by the American Academy of Periodontology show that people with gum disease are twice as likely to develop heart and cardiovascular diseases, compared with those with a healthy mouth.
Gingivitis (the first stage of gum disease) is an inflammatory disease that is triggered by specific bacteria and your body’s immune response to those bacteria.
Sometimes bacteria may be present in high amounts without any symptoms. However, some symptoms of oral infection may include: bad breath or bad taste in your mouth; gums that bleed easily while brushing, flossing, etc.; gums that are red, swollen or hurt; and loose teeth.
Gingivitis can be cured. Left unchecked and untreated, the inflammation that causes gingivitis worsens and spreads to the underlying bone forming pockets in the gums around the teeth. The infection progresses to chronic Periodontitis as the pockets grow deeper and the harmful bacteria inside them continue to multiply and circulate throughout your body.
This serious gum infection is a medical problem with a dental solution.
