Oral Cancer Month

Types of cancerThe office of Dr. Thomas Frank has partnered with The Oral Cancer Foundation in honor of Oral Cancer Awareness Month and will be offering free oral cancer screenings to our patients during the month of April. Oral cancer has existed outside the understanding of much of the public, yet 48,250 Americans will be newly diagnosed this year alone.

These screenings are more important now than ever because oral cancer is on the rise. There are two distinct pathways by which most people come to oral cancer. One is through the use of any tobacco products and alcohol, and the other is through the exposure to the HPV-16 virus, which is now the leading cause of oropharyngeal cancers in the US, and the same one, which is responsible for the vast majority of cervical cancers in women. The quickest growing segment of the oral cancer population are young, healthy, non-smokers due to the connection to this virus.

Today in America, oral cancers are often found as late stage disease in the majority of cases. With early detection, survival rates are high and the side effects from treatment are at their lowest. Like other screenings you engage in such as cervical, skin, prostate, colon, and breast examinations, oral cancer screenings are an effective means of finding cancer at its early, highly curable stages.

Oral cancer is not a rare disease. It kills one person every hour of every day in the US. The problem of late discovery of the disease must change. As your trained professionals in oral cancer education, we take this task seriously by making thorough cancer screenings part of every annual dental exam. So take advantage of your complimentary screening during the month of April and call to make an appointment.
